Terminals and devices

Two different things both get called a “device”, and Musqet keeps them apart.

  • A card machine (a terminal) is the physical unit that takes card payments in person. It signs in to your business with a device login, which you manage in the web dashboard.
  • A till is a phone or tablet running the merchant app, enrolled as a named till on your business. You manage tills from the app.

They are separate: a device login is a real credential a card machine holds, while an enrolled till is just an identity (“this phone is Till 1”). The rest of this page takes card machines first, then tills, then how a terminal looks and behaves.

Musqet runs on the PAX A920 and the Verifone V660p, both Android card machines with a built-in printer. You get the hardware set up with Musqet; you do not buy an arbitrary terminal and connect it.

A card machine signs in with a device login: a username and password issued to that machine, not to a person. A device login is a shared credential for the terminal, kept separate from your own account. You manage them under Terminal logins in the dashboard (you need the manage-devices permission).

On Terminal logins, add a new one and give it a name you will recognise in reports (for example “Front counter”). Musqet generates the username and an eight-character password for you. They are shown once, so note them down or enter them on the machine straight away. You can also set a custom receipt for that device, and, where kiosk mode is enabled, flag it as a kiosk device.

On the card machine, enter the username and password from the device login you created. The machine then signs in to your business and is ready to take payments. (Some fleets are set up by Musqet to sign in automatically by serial number instead, in which case there is nothing to type.)

If a password is lost or you want to rotate it, open the device login on Terminal logins and renew its credentials. This issues a new password (again shown once) while keeping the same username, so the machine keeps its identity and does not need setting up again.

There are two names you can give:

  • the device login name, set when you create it, and
  • a terminal alias per physical machine (up to 50 characters), set under Terminal settings.

Both help you tell machines apart in reports and tables.

From Terminal logins you can drop a device login’s connections, which signs that machine out at once (the terminal notices and returns to its sign-in screen). You can also delete a device login entirely, which signs it out and removes the credential for good. These act on one device login at a time, so to clear several machines you drop or delete each one.

Device logins are controlled by a business-wide switch. Turning device logins off stops any new machine signing in and hides the tools for issuing and managing them. Turn it back on when you need to add or change a machine.

A till is a phone or tablet running the merchant app, enrolled on your business. You manage tills from Devices in the app.

On the phone you want to use, open Devices and enrol it: give it a name (up to 100 characters, for example “Till 1”) and choose how it should behave (see What a till may do). Enrolment always applies to the phone in your hand: the till identity is saved on that device, so there is nothing to scan or pair. You need the manage-devices permission to enrol.

From a till’s detail screen you can rename it, or revoke it. Revoking takes the till identity away from that device straight away, which is what you do for a lost or retired phone. You can enrol the same device again later if you need to.

Each till has a posture and, for shared tills, a re-authentication setting:

  • Personal is one person’s phone: it stays signed in.
  • Shared is a till used by more than one person, and then you choose when it should ask for a PIN again: before every sale, after it has sat idle, or once per shift (a PIN at clock-in, unlocked until clock-out).

PIN prompts on a shared till need staff members set up (see Team and staff). Once you have a staff roster and someone is clocked in, a shared till applies this dial before a sale; without staff members set up, a sale still goes through, just unattributed and with no PIN asked. Money limits are not set on a till; per-person limits belong to staff members.

You set the look and behaviour of your card machines under Terminal settings in the dashboard. These apply to your terminals.

Upload a logo the machine displays. It accepts PNG, JPEG or WebP, up to 3 MB.

Set the business name customers see on the machine. If you leave it unset, your real business name is used.

Customise your receipt footer (up to five lines of 32 characters) and, where it is available to you, a receipt logo (PNG, JPEG, WebP or SVG, up to 3 MB, printed at the receipt width). The logo prints at the top of the customer copy, not the merchant copy, and the customer copy still ends with a small Powered by Musqet mark. A single device login can also carry its own receipt text, which overrides the business one for that machine.

Choose a screen-saver image and how long the machine waits before showing it: 30 seconds, 1, 2, 5 or 10 minutes, or never. The image is PNG, JPEG or WebP up to 3 MB, and around 700 × 165 works well. The screen saver can also be adjusted on the machine itself.

Show the terminal in a light or dark theme. New terminals default to dark.

Kiosk mode leaves a terminal for customers to pay at unattended, as part of an integrated EPOS setup. It is switched on for your business by Musqet, not something you enable yourself. Once it is on, you can flag an individual device login as a kiosk device when you create or edit it. If you want kiosk mode, contact support.

Some things are set on the card machine, in its own Settings screen, rather than in the dashboard.

Choose what staff see first when they pick the machine up: the selection screen, card, or bitcoin (the bitcoin option appears only if your business takes bitcoin). This is set on the machine.

On the machine you control when and what it prints: whether to print receipts automatically, and which receipt to print (the merchant copy or the customer copy). You can also reprint the last receipt or print a test receipt from here.

Get the machine onto wifi or mobile data from its Settings, which opens the Android network settings. The same place is where you set the machine’s time.

The machine’s language (English, German or Spanish) and its screen saver can be set on the machine as well as from the dashboard. Language is covered under Account security.

If a machine is misbehaving, support can request diagnostics from it. The machine then gathers its recent activity logs and sends them to us securely and encrypted, so we can work out what is wrong. There is nothing you need to do beyond letting support know there is a problem.

Which settings appear can depend on your business setup and the machine you have, so you may not see every option above. If something you expect is missing, contact support.
